Algeria Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra, participated, via video teleconference, in the mid-term ministerial conference of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries headed by the Republic of Azerbaijan, where he reiterated the need to re-adhere to the principles for which the movement was established.
A Foreign Ministry press release stated today, Wednesday, that the conference, which was held in the context of this year’s celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement, during the period from July 13 to 14, was organized under the title “The 15/07/2021 Head of diplomacy, Non-Aligned Movement is at the heart of multilateral efforts to respond to global challenges”.
During his intervention in front of the participants in the conference, Lamamra stressed the need for all member states of the movement to reaffirm their adherence to the ideals and principles of the movement. On behalf of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune and the Algerian people, he presented “a well-deserved tribute to all the founding fathers of the movement, including the leaders of the movement of the Algerian National Liberation and the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic.
Speaking about the global health crisis caused by the emerging coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, as well as other transnational challenges, including the phenomenon of terrorism, organized crime, armed conflicts and climate change, Ramtane Lamamra pleaded for “strengthening international cooperation and the multilateral system in accordance with the objectives and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.”
In this regard, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad affirmed that “Algeria will continue to promote the values of pluralism in all its efforts aimed at advancing political and peaceful solutions to the crises in its neighborhood and beyond, as well as in its various initiatives aimed at stimulating regional and continental economic integration.”
According to the communiqué, the head of the Algerian diplomacy recalled the “continuous support provided by the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries since its inception to the just causes of decolonization around the world,” stressing the need for its continued solidarity with the Palestinian and Sahraoui peoples.
Regarding Palestine, Lamamra called on the movement’s members to “provide their support for international efforts aimed at addressing the root causes of the conflict,” stressing “the need to end the occupation and effectively empower the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with El Quds as its capital.”
With regard to Western Sahara, Lamamra indicated that the resumption of the armed conflict between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario Front “deserves more attention” from the international community, and here Mr. Lamamra called on the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to “accelerate the appointment of his personal envoy and launch a relevant political process between the two parties to the conflict, with the aim of reaching a just and lasting political solution that guarantees the right of self-determination for the people of the Sahrawi Arab Republic, a founding member of the African Union.”
The Foreign Ministry indicated that the work of the conference concluded with the adoption of a political declaration in which the participants reaffirmed “the relevance of all the founding principles of the movement, as well as their keenness to continue working towards establishing: balanced, peaceful and democratic international relations.”
